We often hear of students coming overseas to study at our universities in the UK, and with so many UK students applying to universities as well, how many would consider studying abroad and why would they choose that option?
The option of studying abroad may be chosen for several reasons; perhaps for the simple opportunity to go abroad and experience life in a different country; or maybe universities in your own country do not offer the course, or does not have space on the course, that you wish do study in; or do some universities abroad offer international qualifications?
Whatever the reason, if you decide to study overseas, you then have to decide where to go, but how do you choose? What are the top universities for studying abroad? Where do you find good, genuine advice about the universities.
A good place to start looking would be studyoverseas.co.uk. This website provides nearly all the information and advice for universities worldwide and the different courses available. Another place to search for advice would be direct.gov.uk. This is a government funded website that offers advice and information on nearly everything, from jobs to education and much more. As part of its education section, it provides information and advice about courses and money for studying abroad.
It may seem expensive to study abroad, as you will have to get permission to be in an overseas country to study via a visa, and then there are your travel costs to get there and back, plus the course costs and having somewhere to live. However you can get aid with these through a student loan and once you are overseas you will often find the cost of living (depending on where you study) can be quite cheap. If you want to work whilst studying you will have to get a visa that allows you to work as well.
You might not have thought about studying abroad at all, but may have stumbled across an advert from overseas universities. Quite often universities abroad will recruit international students, and this may help you in deciding which university to go to. By asking for students to come and study at a university abroad, the university will often provide information on where you could stay and will sometimes partially cover costs such as the visa to study.
Students who choose to study abroad often gain more than their qualification. They gain an insight into a new culture and different ways of life, as well as the true ability to live on their own, where they do not know anyone to start with.
If you do want to study abroad, one of the easiest ways to make a decision is to reduce down the possibilities by limiting your choices to universities that provide courses in your home-language.
