You see the adverts on TV, but how often do you ask yourself, ‘what is the Open University?’.  The Open University is for anybody of any age and is a way of studying university courses from the comfort of your own home, whilst providing full support and several facilities throughout the country to go to. It prides itself on distance based learning.
You may be thinking, so it’s similar to e-learning; being able to learn and study using online courses in your own home and often in your own time. But this is more than just giving a student the tools and allowing then to get on with it in their own time.
The Open University offers a large range of courses, ranging from Degrees and Diplomas to general courses and Certifications in a variety of fields. Being predominantly distance based, the Open University fits in with anyone’s lifestyle, by allowing you to work from your own home, around family and work, however you are often given deadlines for your coursework, and if exams are sent to you they are to be done in a certain time limit.
One of the biggest differences between the Open University and general e-learning or distance based learning, is that the Open University has several research facilities throughout the country, although most are based in Milton Keynes, that allow you to go there and discuss any problems face to face with tutors, or to use the resources available.
Naturally going to these centres is not essential in a distance based learning course, however there are some courses that are run by the Open University just like a normal university where you do need to attend classes.
The Open University offers more than just courses for those interested in home based learning. It works with companies and organisations to run training sessions and courses for employers. Some of the research facilities are also provided to do various scientific research, for example the study into the deadly tree disease that was supposedly sweeping through the forests of Britain, was found to be not so deadly by a Botanist from the Open University. Researchers and Scientists for the Open University also often work alongside other organisations such as Medical Research Boards to research new diseases, or develop new vaccinations, etc.
The Open University offers so much for everyone, if you do not need to study but are looking for a job, it could provide you with a new career.

Is it too late to further your education?

What is the first thing you think of when you hear the word education? Is it children at a school? Perhaps it is teenagers at college, or possibly young adults, no older than their mid twenties, studying hard at university?
What would you say if I said you could further your education at any age? Would you laugh and think I am joking, or would you stop to consider your possibilities?
Once upon a time education was, indeed, only for the young, and anything you learnt after that was through life experiences and training sessions in the workplace. Nowadays anyone, at any age can learn, and you are simply known as a mature student, studying in adult education, if you choose to walk this path of life after the usual ages of being in education.

There are so many opportunities for mature students. A college is not just for teenagers, many will offer courses for adults to partake in. Colleges often teach  A-Levels and vocational courses during the day, and will often run courses in the evening for mature students in order to allow them to still work whilst learning.

Quite often you will see young people applying to go to university after completing their chosen college course, and universities like to use a points based system for selecting their candidates, where the points are based on the marks you got at college, so many adults looking for a place to study can get put off by this idea. Don’t be! Mature students are still chosen on a points based system, however the universities don’t worry about what marks you got in the past, they look at what you have achieved in the workplace and you personal statement that gets sent off with your application.

A university holds so many different courses and it doesn’t matter what age you are, a course can have students ranging from 18/19 years of age all the way through to 50 years of age, or older.

However if you are seeking to study, and do not want to go on a course where you may feel isolated by your age, there are still more options. There are plenty of opportunities to study from home within your own time. These are often run by companies such as the open university or ics learning. You will have to pay for your course, just as you would if you went to a college or university, and all the equipment for your education will be provided to you, and this will allow you to work in your own time, in the comfort of your own home.

What is the Open University?

The Open University is a distance learning institution that was established in 1969 and accepting its first students in 1971 was the first successful university of its type in the World.  It accepts all people, irrespective of background and educational standard onto it’s courses – with only a basic pre-requisite that you work your way up through the course as you would in a traditional campus based establishment.

The Open University fits in easily around your existing lifestyle and routines.  You can study many different courses in your own time around your current commitments, within certain parameters.  Certain timetables are still set, within the assignment schedule, for completion, as the University still has to have courses achieved within a specific time.

The courses at the Open University are designed to be completed in roughly the same time as a course would be completed in a campus based university.  The student working from home would still be able to complete a full degree in three years, if working on it full time and within six years if working on it part-time.  The courses can be studied in succession, with a level one course still being available in the third year if a student should wish to take this on.  There is a maximum number of courses that a student can complete in a year, though this is quite a high number as it based on what is achievable at a mainstream university.  This means that you cannot complete a named degree in less than three years.  It is also possible, via the Open University, to achieve an Honours degree, just as it would be normally.  You need to complete a certain number of courses at a particular value in order to achieve this.

The Open Universities distance learning approach to higher education allows everybody the chance to achieve a degree, diploma or certificate in higher education which they might not have though possible before it was available.  Many people relish the idea of going to university, though for whatever reason they have not been able to realise this ambition.  Distance learning courses offer you the chance to not only complete a degree, but also in many cases attend a short residential course for your chosen subject.  There is a programme which all students can access online which allows them access to a virtual university world.  Here they can meet not only people from their own course, but also access general areas that all students can communicate within.  This allows the student to submerge themselves fully into a university experience without the expense and commitment of going and living somewhere else.

The Open University allows for a unique experience and a rewarding one at that, for people to realise their dream of attending a quality university and achieving a real qualification which will serve to their advantage for the rest of their lives.
