E-learning, e-mail, e-cards; what is e-anything?! We all know what learning, mail and cards are so the difference between these and the ‘e-‘ versions is that the latter are all done via the internet. Most of us will know how to send an e-mail; some of us will know how to send an e-card; but how many know what is e-learning?
 

E-learning is slowly becoming more and more popular. If you went to a college or university, you have to go in to the lessons, to the lectures, and have the deadlines for coursework and exams. However by learning through the internet, you can learn around your work and home life with ease.
 

Over the years there has been an increase in interest in e-learning, and now there is a large variety of websites offering online courses, such as icslearn.co.uk; OpenStudyCollege.com; and e-learningcentre.co.uk to name but a few.
 

E-learning can provide many possibilities in the realm of study. You can gain a number of qualifications from GCSE’s to Degrees and Diplomas and so much more.

You can also do training courses through e-learning, for example train4trade is a company that will train you in either plumbing or electrics that you can then trade in for an entire lifetime. This course provides you with a tutor that you can contact via e-mail at any time and, as with most e-learning courses, you will receive some materials to work from home, like a workbook, but train4trade use an internet based approach to teach you the practical side of a trade before you are asked to attend a few sessions over the course of a few years to get officially certified in the practical elements.

By learning through the internet, you can have all the privacy of your own home and no embarrassment of getting something wrong in front of a whole class. Quite often, as with train4trade, you will be allocated a tutor that you can contact via e-mail with any queries about your course. This is also the person you will then send your coursework to for marking.
 

Many courses offered through e-learning allow you to work at your own pace, so you do not have the pressure of working to deadlines whilst still working and dealing with your home life.

The benefits of learning online, what is e-learning

E-learning is an interactive way of learning online, using new tools and programmes to enable students to learn many news skills in a more engaging way.  It can help to motivate those who find standard college courses tedious and uninteresting.  E-learning provides a powerful tool to use, even in the college environment to aid learning for students who require multiple media input in their lessons.
The range of online courses available through the e-learning medium has grown massively over the last few years as demand for alternative learning styles has grown.  They provide a faster, more up to date way of learning for those who do not wish to do the more traditional paper based correspondence courses.
Some courses are completed, start to finish online, where as others which lead to a formal qualification may involve taking a test at a college.
There are many benefits to online learning.  The main benefit being that the student can work from wherever and whenever they want.  This provides a great incentive to people who otherwise might not be able to attend colleges or other establishments, or those who have commitments that prevent them from being able to attend.
The other benefits fall in around the idea of convenience.  The courses can be completed in your own time (usually within limits if coursework or assignments are involved), there is the option of an immediate start with most courses.  The variety of courses available covers a huge range of subject areas, no longer just concentrating on language and computing courses – which were a standard available for quite some time.
The timescales for learning new subjects is (within reason) entirely in your own control, with study being possible at any time of the day or night.  This makes online learning, along with correspondence learning, the most flexible way of learning for many people.  It also allows many who cannot access college courses for academic reasons to take on courses that might not otherwise be available to them, as many of these courses do not take previous qualifications into account because they work on a desire from the student to complete the course.
