Where can I find career advice?

Whilst you’re at school, you will get asked, “what would you like to be when you grow up?”. As a child you might say fireman, astronaut or cowboy. But as you get older you will start to think about what it is you want to do with your life.  What career will you choose, and where will you find advice on that career?
During your last few years of secondary school, you will be given a couple of lessons about your choices and get introduced to Connexions, a Government funded facility designed to aid 13-19 year olds in their choices.
Connexions advisors will often go round schools and will usually help with the decision of what courses to take at college, however they are also there to discuss career options, and help you to create a Curriculum Vitae for your job searches. If you are having trouble, or do not have a clue where to start looking for your chosen career, advisors from Connexions will give you a helping hand. They can help research and provide contacts for you to get in touch with to ask about the career of your choice and possible work experiences, if not an actual job.
 Another government funded facility that gives career advice is the Job Centre Plus. When most people hear Job Centre, they think of a facility that enables you to search for a job, however they do so much more than that. The Job Centre Plus allows anybody of any age to search for a job, and get help or advice with their career of choice.
 You will quite often need to make an appointment to see one of the advisers at a Job Centre, and you may need to go to a few appointments in order to get all the information and advice you would need. This would be due to the first appointment discussing what the career is that you need advice on, and then other appointments will be so the advisors can research and gain any contacts related to your enquiry.
 Both of these facilities are well used and provide good support for everyone, however one of the best ways to gain advice is to go and speak to people working in the career of your choice, and that way you will get first-hand advice.

Government Facilities For Advice On Career

There are many websites offering help on careers advice available on the internet.  There are also government websites available to aid people looking for advice on careers.  The subject of career advice is difficult as it crosses over in many cases into retraining and job searches, so it can be hard to find information that relates purely to advancing your career or finding one in the first place.

The main thing about careers advice is tackling it in the right way.  As with any project, planning is the best way to start.  If you are starting out at the very beginning of your working life you need to decide which field you would like to work in.  This is important, not just for your prospects of getting a job in that field, but also so you can decide on the best route, educationally and socially for you to achieve your goals.  A new website, called “Next Step” has opened recently which can be found from the government website www.direct.gov.uk.  This website has lots of information on different careers, including an indepth assessment which will enable you to see what you are assessed as being most likely to do well in. 

This website offers not only advice on careers, but also information on training that is available and different ways that education and improving your skills can help you progress in your chosen career.  There is also information on funding on this site and information on how best to maximise your chances of getting a job once you have completed your education and training.  It also includes help on emphasising your best points on your curriculum vitae and how best to fill in application forms, as well as extensive assistance on the interview itself, as this is where many people have the most problems.

The Direct.gov website also offers limited advice in itself, if you don’t have time to navigate your way around the “Next Step” site.  The advice is a little less comprehensive, although still valuable.  Careers advice is also available at many agencies, both on their websites and if you attend in person at any of their sites.
